HOLLOW POND

Vacant and empty in my mind. No lake bed and no end, a continuous depressive system. Derelict, bare, without reflection - a reductive space with no means to appraise, no scope. It runs blindly, deprived of its core elements, without real significance or value. Unable to function properly, another failed structure, another vacant hole.

Hollow Ponds are a fragment of Epping Forest, but I have chosen the singular, more concentrated POND. I will visit the ‘real’ place once this work is released - till then, HOLLOW POND remains an idea, a mystery to me.

This is a disposition where outlook becomes in-look.

SCENES FROM A PLACE CALLED WORLD A selection of paintings from 2020 - 2025

A solo exhibition of paintings by Rebecca Riess filling the lobby of their flagship space in Saxmundham. Opening reception at The Art Station February 8th 2025, 3 - 5pm. 48 High Street, Saxmundham, Suffolk, IP17 1AB

Part truth, part fiction, Scenes From A Place Called World brings together a collection of 75 paintings which morph’s between contemporary realism and surrealism. Riess is intrigued by the psychological effects of circumstance.  Her paintings contain fictional spaces which overlap with reality, transient timelines, feminist and socio-political concerns and critiques. Through these obscured narratives Riess processes subjects including Long Covid, The Abuse of Power, War, and Climate Breakdown. She is interested in how we digest and internalise experience’s and information, fusing her own psychology and imagination that create ‘example’ worlds.
